Old SymbolsWhere every symbol began

What’s new

New pages, improvements and corrections, newest first. Each page also shows when it was added and last updated.

  • Improved Fuller entries, with new sources, for 20 of our shortest: five Egyptian symbols with the museum objects that carry them, the Masonic acacia, the Fresno Nightcrawler and the Dover Demon, six runes from the rune poems, and six tarot trumps with the oldest surviving cards. See Egyptian hieroglyphics, Norse runes and Tarot.
  • Fixed A fact-check of our oldest entries: corrected the Chi-Rho’s pre-Christian history (coins of the Ptolemies, not Ptolemy III), took Sikhism off the list of traditions that hold Om sacred, and gave every claim on the Chi-Rho, ren, fehu and Christian skull and crossbones entries a source you can read online. See Chi-Rho, Om, Ren, Fehu and Skull and crossbones.
  • New New: Aztec symbols and gods, Maya symbols and gods and Olmec symbols.

  • Improved Collection pages show their entries first, with the collection’s own text after them.
  • Improved More pages in Halloween symbols.

  • New Photo search: point your camera at a symbol to look it up. Search by photo
