1111 angel number
Four ones, or 11:11 on a clock, the minute people make a wish. Angel-number writers read it as a moment when thoughts and wishes carry extra power.
Meaning
1111 is where two beliefs meet: the custom of making a wish at 11:11, and the New Age idea that angels send messages through repeated numbers. Both are beliefs, and the meanings are claims made by the people who hold them. Doreen Virtue wrote in 1999 that someone shown 111 angel number may find that “every time you look at a clock the time reads 1:11 or 11:11”, and gave 111 the meaning that thoughts are “manifesting into form at record speeds”. Mental Floss’s 2026 guide says there is “a reason why people make wishes on 11:11”: numerology calls one “God’s number”, and 1111 is said to be a sign that “your manifestations have extra power”. Dictionary.com is blunter: “there’s no evidence that 11:11 has any magic powers”.
Origin and history
Where the 11:11 wish began is not known. Dictionary.com calls its origin “murky”, and The Dallas Morning News, answering a reader in 2026, found the saying widely shared but its origin not. Dictionary.com credits its spread to Solara Antara Amaa-Ra, a Californian who founded a New Age group, Star-Borne Unlimited, in 1986, and whose followers by 1989 held “an entire cosmology that revolved around the number and time 11:11”. In a 1992 interview with the Hartford Courant, quoted by The Dallas Morning News, Solara said 11:11 was “pre-encoded into our cellular memory banks long ago”. Folk belief in 11:11 spread through the 1990s and 2000s, Dictionary.com says. The USC Digital Folklore Archives records a student who first heard “It’s 11:11, make a wish” from his cousin in 2000, at the end of eighth grade; she told him that a wish made in his mind at that minute would come true.
Why do people make a wish at 11:11?
Because the custom says a wish made at that minute comes true. Dictionary.com says the symmetry of 11:11 appeals to numerologists. The Dallas Morning News lists rules some “devout wishers” follow: look at the clock exactly at 11:11, keep to a specific, positive thought, and look away before 11:12. Dictionary.com notes a Snapchat custom of sending a snap of the time 11:11 to someone you are wishing for, and a line in Something Corporate’s song “Konstantine” (2000): “I always catch the clock, it’s 11:11.”
Apophenia and 11-11-11
On 11 November 2011, John W. Hoopes, an anthropologist at the University of Kansas, asked Psychology Today readers whether 11:11 on 11-11-11 had felt significant: if it had, “because of the pattern on your digital watch”, that was apophenia, the tendency to read random patterns as meaningful. He called the 11-11-11 fixation partly a product of digital technology, since a hundred years earlier clocks had round dials.
