111 angel number

Three ones, the best-known angel number. Doreen Virtue, who popularised angel numbers, wrote in 1999 that 111 means your thoughts are “manifesting into form at record speeds”.

Meaning

111 is the sequence Virtue used to explain the whole idea: a person may see it so often, she wrote, that “every time you look at a clock the time reads 1:11 or 11:11”. In the angel-number belief, a New Age idea found today mainly online, angels send such sequences as messages; the meanings here are what the belief’s writers claim, not facts about the number. Virtue’s 1999 reading was a warning as much as a promise: “Monitor your thoughts carefully, and be sure to only think about what you want, not what you don’t want,” because 111 is “like the bright light of a flash bulb” that fixes your thoughts. A 2026 Mental Floss article is gentler, saying repeated sightings of 111 “may be a sign of new beginnings and spiritual awakening”.

Origin and history

Doreen Virtue was a trained psychotherapist who became, in the words of the World Religions and Spirituality Project, “one of the most successful New Age authors of the 2000s and 2010s”. Her list of number sequences appeared in Healing with the Angels (Hay House, 1999). Hay House followed it with Angel Numbers: The Angels Explain the Meaning of 111, 444, and Other Numbers in Your Life (2005) and Angel Numbers 101: The Meaning of 111, 123, 444, and Other Number Sequences (2008), with 111 in both titles.

Sources disagree about when the name began. Mental Floss dates the idea to the late 1990s in one article, and in another says Virtue coined the term in her 2005 book; the 1999 text calls them “number sequences”. Virtue herself now says she coined and popularised the phrase, and that the meanings were received through meditation and automatic writing.

In 2017 Virtue converted to Christianity. Writing in Christianity Today in 2022, she said that Deuteronomy 18:10–12 listed practices she had used, “such as divination, interpreting signs and omens, and mediumship”, and that she had begged people to stop using her old products. Hay House ended its work with her in November 2017, after she posted that passage online. She now warns Christians against angel numbers as divination.

The Pythagorean claim

Britannica’s entry on numerology says its theory rests on “the Pythagorean idea that all things can be expressed in numerical terms”. How much of that idea goes back to Pythagoras himself is disputed. Carl Huffman, in the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, notes that Pythagoras wrote nothing, that treatises were later forged in his name, and that in his own day his fame did not rest on mathematics; whether he was “in any sense a mathematician” remains controversial.

Seeing patterns in numbers

John W. Hoopes, an anthropologist at the University of Kansas, calls the tendency to read meaning into random patterns apophenia, “an error of perception”. Writing for Psychology Today in 2011, he described numerology as a form of apophenia, and apophenia itself as “a normal human experience”.
