888 angel number
Three eights. Angel-number writers disagree about it: Doreen Virtue’s 1999 list read 888 as a phase of life ending, and later writers read it as abundance. Eight is separately a lucky number in Chinese tradition.
Meaning
In the New Age belief that angels send messages through repeated numbers, 888 has two readings, and both are claims of the belief’s writers. Virtue’s 1999 list says “a phase of your life is about to end, and this is a sign to give you forewarning to prepare”, and adds a harvest image: “The crops are ripe. Don’t wait to pick and enjoy them.” Mental Floss’s 2026 guide leads with money: it gives 888 “abundance, prosperity, financial success, and karmic rewards”, and calls eight “an infinity symbol turned sideways”.
Origin and history
888 has an older place in Christian writing. Irenaeus of Lyon, in Against Heresies, reports that a teacher named Marcus held that the name Jesus, “if you reckon up the numerical value of the letters, amounts to eight hundred and eighty-eight”; Irenaeus reports it in order to expose it. Marcus also tied the number to Christ being called Alpha and Omega. Britannica’s article on number symbolism gives the same total for the name of Jesus in Greek: three eights, a number “often considered auspicious”.
Eight in Chinese tradition
In Mandarin, eight is ba, which sounds like fa, prosperous, Tai Chin, who taught Mandarin at UCLA, told NPR in 2008. NPR reported that eight means wealth and prosperity to those who observe Chinese numerology, which is why the Beijing Olympics were set to open on 8 August 2008 at 8:08:08 p.m.
